Simultaneous bilingualism and speech style as predictors of variation in allophone production: Evidence from Finland-Swedish

This study investigates cross-linguistic transfer in the production of long mid front vowels [ø?] and [œ?] by simultaneous bilingual Finnish Finland-Swedish speakers Finland. In Swedish, phoneme /ø/ can be realised as allophones [ø] [œ], while Finnish, only is used. Combining approaches from sociophonetic research, used acoustic analysis to compare height fronting produced monolingual three different speech styles on a continuum formality. The data 115 participants are stratified according language background, style, region, age. statistical indicates increased overlap vowel spaces speakers, particularly informal speech. results suggest potential effect distinction phonetic variants bilinguals, well demonstrate importance considering style research.
